There are many different sizes and types of inflatable pools: from kiddie pools to inflatable pools for adults and they are readily available at most big box stores. One of the things owners do not consider, and that inflatables have in common with their larger above ground and in ground counterparts, is the need to keep them clean.
And more importantly keep them sanitary. Let’s take a look at how to keep inflatable pools clean and sanitary to keep swimmers of all ages safe.
Inflatable pool chemistry
Water chemistry is very important, especially for smaller bodies of water like those found in inflatable pools. Most inflatable pools aren’t made to hold water for longer periods of time and they are best drained, cleaned and stored when not being used. However, large inflatable pools can be used for about 2 weeks if the water chemistry is maintained and the sanitizer is kept in range (pH: 7.2 – 7.4, free chlorine: 2ppm – 3ppm).
Given the small volume, the water should be tested daily and adjusted as needed. It may also be necessary to shock if the water smells like chlorine as that’s a sign of unsafe water and the chlorine smell is actually used chlorine (chloramines) and is a warning that the water isn’t clean.
Keeping your pool clean
Bathing before getting in your inflatable pool and using swim diapers for the littles’ are two easy ways to help keep your water cleaner longer. Another easy way to keep your pool water cleaner is to cover it when it’s not in use. Covering your pool keeps leaves, dirt and animals out of the water and minimizes contaminants and germs.
To keep the inside clean you can scrub the walls with a diluted bleach solution (1 tablespoon of regular household bleach to 1 gallon of water) after draining and then rinse well and dry before storing.
Although not related to keeping an inflatable pool clean, it’s very important to consider water safety for any body of water, no matter what size it is. Never leave pets or children unattended and take precautions to prevent them from entering when they are not attended. You can never be too safe!
Sutro pool monitor can help you keep your water balanced by testing the pH, total alkalinity, and free chlorine 3 times a day, letting you know how to actively maintain your water.
So there you have it, how to keep your inflatable pool clean, and as a bonus some safety to keep the good times rolling.
