What is backwashing?

Why do I need to backwash my pool filter?
- First you must shut the filter system off.
- Then, lock the backwash hose to the filter’s waste port and turn the valve to backwash position.
- Turn the filter system on.
- Let the water run to start the backwashing process. Do this for a few minutes until you notice the water clears out.
- When you’re done, turn the filter system off again and turn the multiport valve to “rinse”.
- Once again, turn the filter system on and let it rinse for about 30-60 seconds.
- Turn the filter system off.
- Finally, turn the multiport valve to “Filter”. And you’re done! Piece of cake, right?
How to Backwash a D.E. Filter
If you one a D.E. filter, you take the following steps to start the backwash process. In this case you’ll also need D.E. powder (Diatomaceous Earth powder).
- Turn off the filter system.
- Attach the backwash hose to the backwash port.
- Set the multiport valve to Backwash and turn the pump on.
- Switch the filter system on, and let it go for a couple of minutes.
- Turn the filter system back off.
- Spin the multiport valve to Rinse. Then, once again turn the system back on,
- This time let it run for at least one minute.
- Turn off the filter system and set the multiport valve back to “Filter”.
- Add D.E. powder to the filter. Refer to your filter’s manual to know how much D:E: powder you must add.
You must add D.E. powder to replace the one that was backwashed. The best place to do this is through the pool’s skimmer.
First, you want to mix the recommended amount with water until you get a wet mud-like texture. Before adding it, make sure to use the skimmer closest to the filter and pump and have the system running. Then, you want to add the mixed D.E. powder directly into the skimmerand the filter will be recharged.
How to dispose backwash water
Now that you’ve properly backwash your pool filter, it’s time to toss backwash water out. However, what is the right place to dispose of it? If you’re thinking about a regular drain, the street or your own yard you may want to think again.
Disposing of filter backwash water can be tricky business, as regulations may vary depending on where you live. The recommended way to go is to collect it and have it discharged in a regulated sanitary sewer. Before you backwash your pool filter, make sure to check with your local water authorities .
How often should I backwash my pool filter?
You must take notice of the normal operating filter pressure. When the pressure gauge of your filter rises above it (whatever your normal levels are), it’s an indication that you need to backwash your filter. Usually these levels are around 8-10 psi over the starting level.
